What are usage limits?
Normally the broadband service providers define the usage limits. They do not limit the time you spend online. Most ISPs will charge you a monthly fee and let you download a certain amount of data. Some providers are also now offering unlimited usage.
Broadband usage charges and revision during the contract period
The provider, based on the contract type, fixes the charges. Most contracts include a provision for price increase during the contract period. One should be careful while signing the contract. Be sure that a clause is added to the effect that they let you know in advance of any intentions to revise the charges. There is a provision to complain to the Office of Communications (Ofcom), if you think they have acted in breach of the contract with out satisfactory response to your enquiries.
What affects usage limits
New users should know that down loading of a video or music can increase the usage. It is always better to have a medium usage connection that will allow flexibility. Maintain your own usage profile. The amount of data you transfer depends on what you do. Video is one of the main causes of high usage on the Internet. This includes watching movie trailers (or even entire movies), home movies posted on websites, or viewing TV over the Internet. Peer-to-peer (P2P) programs such as eDonkey, Kazaa, and BitTorrent can also be high bandwidth utilisers.
