What is required for broadband?
A modem or router is required to connect to the Internet. The modem is an interface between the computer and the internet. When a router is used several computers can be linked to the internet directly at the same time. You may wish to connect an internet phone through the router. Some providers like ntl:Telewest offer a free modem/router or allow you to buy one from them. In such cases they will come to assist you to setup the modem. Check with them to see what level of support they offer before signing up. Alternatively computer retailers such as PC World or online computer stores usually sell them. The router or the modems may have different features. It is better to study the features before going for one. Some may be easier to setup than others.
There will be a requirement for a microfilter for each device plugged into a phone socket, while going for an ADSL connection. (This includes fax machines, sky box, everything!). This is a small device that plugs into the phone socket and filters the broadband signal from the telephone signal so that you can use both the phone and broadband at the same time. Before signing up, ensure that you have all necessary accessories. You may wish to check further on the broadband providers website to see if they have any special offers. Check up the hardware requirements, either by having detailed discussions with the provider or by browsing the Internet.
